A lot of people debate over whether or not buying a wine cooler is of any use to them. I mean a normal refrigerator or cupboard works just as well right? Wrong, storing your wine in a place that is too warm or even too cold could compromise the integrity of the wine.

Temperature is one of the things that affect the flavour of the wine. Wine is best enjoyed at temperatures that a slightly cooler than room temperature yet warmer than the refrigerator temperature. The average temperature of a regular refrigerator is about -6°C and is made to store different kinds of items like; cool drinks, fruits, vegetables and meats whilst a wine chiller temperature is at about 3°C to 12°C and is specially designed to store wines.

Avoid rapid changes in temperature when it comes to

A wine chiller keeps your wine at its optimum aging temperature for all wines. Wine coolers help to control the stability in case of the temperature fluctuations.

  • A lighter wine requires a temperature of about 4°C to 11°C
  • Full bodied wines (any wine over 13.5% alcohol) temperature requirements are, 11°C to 15°C
  • Sparkling wines need to be kept at temperatures of about 11°C to 12°C

A normal refrigerator removes humidity as it cools. Corks must remain moist in order to do their job properly. A dried out cork leads to a musty smelling, “corked” wine, and it also allows other smells from the fridge to seep into your wine, compromising the taste.

The average room temperature is too warm to both serve and store your wine. The warmer the ambient temperature, the quicker the wine will age and go bad. Ever noticed that your wine tastes like pure alcohol or vinegar after leaving it in a hot car for a few hours, even though the room temperature is not as hot as the car example, but wine stored at room temperature will taste dull.

The vibrations your fridge gives off when the compressor cycles on, when it cycles off, when the ice maker spits out ice, when you’re using the water dispenser, all alter the taste and aging process of the wine.
